His compositions have been called
neo-romantic or neo-melodic.

He himself thinks to be an “evolutionist” rather than a revolutionary. Brain, heart and soul want to be touched by music. Very few people fell happy when every aspect is changed in their lives. Everybody needs familiar elements to be able to understand and learn about the new ones. And, to speak Mozart: The audience and the specialists both ought to feel happy. But that’s of course a hard and dangerous way.

Listen to the different worlds discovered by Wolfgang Wagenhäuser who is starting from gregorianic coming across to twelvetone and always finding new techniques for example such of rotational levels in time and harmony. Since 2015, inspired by his frequent stays in Asia, he has been incorporating eastern elements of pentatonic and hexatonic scales into his compositional work.

Last not least: He likes to compose humorous pieces from time to time – and audience and musicians just have pleasure playing and listening such as his lovely dance-variations about a theme of Tschaikowski (with gavotte, menuett, chacha, rumba, slowfox etc)…
